How to Optimise Campus Space to Establish a Happy Campus and Unleash Students’ Potentials

Student Empowerment Theatre

Overview

The principal of the Ma On Shan Tsung Tsin Secondary School will share how to redesign campus spaces with a focus on student interests and the school's unique activities, allowing the activity centre to promote diverse student development. The school has consistently advocated for multi-faceted student development, emphasising the integration of the Six Educations—moral, physical, social, aesthetic, and spiritual—into the school design. By transforming idle spaces into activity centres, the school helps students discover their interests and strengths, develop their potential, and enhance their confidence. Through shared spaces, the school encourages interaction among students and between students and teachers, breaking traditional learning modes, providing a place to relieve stress, promoting physical and mental health, and reinforcing teacher-student integration and positive values. The activity centre includes a fencing hall, a gym, and a recording studio. The school hopes to provide professional facilities to develop students' potential, offering them opportunities to turn their activities into professional skills.

The team utilises design thinking to reflect student needs. In addition to efficiently using space to accommodate different activities within the same area, the team has designed seating areas named ‘Chill Areas’ for students to rest. All spaces are developed around holistic development through the Six Educations. Regarding social education, the school has a performing arts and cultural centre and a band practice room, where students can form bands and practice, learn teamwork, and boost their confidence.

Participants in this seminar will learn:
• how to promote diverse development through campus facilities and design;
• how to help students understand their interests and strengths and develop their potential; and
• how to reflect student interaction and collaboration through shared spaces to achieve the vision of a happy campus
