Serious games as a tool for enhancing media literacy
K12 Theatre
Overview
This presentation explores the use of serious games as a tool for enhancing students' media literacy. Despite research indicating that young people struggle to evaluate digital content, there is limited understanding of how they assess the credibility of online information and sources. Identifying the criteria that young people consider to be indicators of credibility is essential for developing effective educational curricula and programs. Educators need tools to raise students' awareness of fake news and biased information while fostering the skills necessary for evaluating digital content. Serious games combine the engaging nature of games with the objectives of media literacy education, offering practical and immersive experiences that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and decision-making skills. Additionally, serious games enhance motivational dispositions such as interest in civic issues and self-efficacy. Findings from research projects evaluating serious games provide valuable insights into using serious games in classrooms to combat fake news and improve students' ability to identify credible information online. One of the main outcomes of the research project is informing teachers, researchers, and young people about the factors influencing how young people assess information credibility in digital environments. Empirical results offer promising insights into the successful use of serious games to enhance students' media literacy. The project also highlights opportunities and challenges for educators, demonstrating the potential for media literacy education in schools. Additionally, a newly developed board game focusing on enhancing media literacy among youth provides a playful learning opportunity.
