Fostering Cultural Identity in Early Childhood: Trends and Practices

Early Childhood Education Theatre

Overview

This seminar explores effective strategies for fostering cultural identity in early childhood education, sharing the latest research and practical experiences. It will highlight the significance of establishing cultural identity and its impact on children's future development, particularly in cultivating 21st-century skills. The seminar will also analyse current trends and practices in promoting cultural identity within Hong Kong's early childhood education landscape, encompassing curriculum design, teaching activities, and home-school collaboration. Diverse teaching activities will be introduced, including incorporating picture books, cultural experiences, and home-school collaborative projects, along with practical examples of integrating cultural identity into daily teaching.

Research findings indicate that early childhood educators in Hong Kong generally recognise the importance of promoting cultural identity and actively implement related practices in their classrooms. However, some educators report challenges in implementation, such as a lack of relevant teaching resources and limited parental involvement. The research also emphasises the need for home-school collaboration to create an environment that respects cultural diversity. Through diverse teaching activities, such as cultural experience activities and picture book sharing, children's understanding and appreciation of different cultures can be enhanced, fostering their cross-cultural understanding and global citizenship.

Participants of this seminar will:
1. understand the Importance of Cultural Identity: Participants will gain deeper insights into the impact of cultural identity on child development;
2. acquire practical Strategies: They will receive specific teaching methods and activity designs to effectively promote cultural identity in the classroom; and
3. Learn to promote Home-School Collaboration: Participants will learn how to establish effective home-school partnerships to encourage parental involvement in children's cultural education.
