Promoting Cultural Learning in the Chinese Language Education through Metaverse

Overview
In this open lesson, with the use ‘EduVenture-Meta’, the newest educational innovation on Metaverse developed by the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies (CUHK), students will embark on Meta Quest3 to explore the landscapes of the Greater Bay Area/Shanghai and immerse themselves in those locations. The objective of the class is to familiarize students with the appearance of the Greater Bay Area/Shanghai, guided by the teacher to understand the cultural landscapes, ultimately gaining knowledge about Chinese culture. Through reading literary works, immersing themselves in cultural scenes within EduVenture-Meta, and classroom interactions, students will be able to experience learning and acquire a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, fostering reflective thinking.
Starting from 2024/25, the teaching package will be implemented in the Chinese language classes of ten secondary schools through the Jockey Club VR Project for Chinese Language Education. In this open lesson, the project team will share preliminary teaching outcomes, including insights from frontline teachers and student work exhibitions.
Participants in this open lesson will have the opportunity to learn about:
1. How to promote the teaching of Chinese culture in high school Chinese language classes through EduVenture-Meta.
2. Strategies for facilitating high school students to experience, understand, and deepen their knowledge of Chinese culture through EduVenture-Meta, thereby enhancing cultural education.
