Learning Chinese in Cantonese: Latest Tools for Second Language Classrooms

K12 Theatre

Overview

Cantonese romanisation is rarely seen in Chinese learning materials in Hong Kong, which is inconvenient for ethnic minorities students and second-generation immigrants learning Chinese as a second language. It is shown in research studies that using romanisation can assist students to better acquire Chinese, but how should teachers introduce it in second language classrooms?

In this seminar, the speaker will introduce three tools launched in 2024: 1. TypeDuck (a Cantonese Input Keyboard with multilingual translation prompts) , 2. Visual Fonts (a tool that automatically annotates Chinese characters with Jyutping), and 3. 'Little Jyutping Fighter' (a Jyutping learning book for kids). The speaker will also show you how these latest tools can increase students’ exposure to Chinese materials, helping them to learn Chinese more effectively in Cantonese.
