Culturally Responsive Teaching.AI-Powered Poetry Writing

Future Learning Theatre

Overview

Hong Kong is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with students coming from different ethnicity and culture. As the population of non-Chinese speaking students increases, it is a great challenge for Chinese language teachers in local schools. The speaker’s team believes in the ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching’ approach which connects students' cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn and how teachers teach in school.

In this year, the speaker’s team is using the newest AI tools to instruct NCS students to write Chinese poems, which results in enhancement in learning efficiency and sense of accomplishment. The team has also joined ‘(QEF Thematic Network) Empowerment and Transition – Supporting Teachers to Promote Multicultural Students’ Chinese Learning in Primary and Secondary Schools’ programme and developed the teaching plan mentioned above. The speaker’s team has provided their NCS students both ‘Pull-out classes’ and ‘Inclusive classes’ experience, strengthening students learning in two ways. Students’ reaction are very positive and the team is glad and honoured to receive a teaching award with this programme.

Participants of this seminar will understand:
1. the concept of ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching’ approach and how it works; and
2. how to make use of AI tools in Chinese writing classes.
