InnoSTEMer

Overview

The content of this seminar was recognised by the Excellent Teacher Award in HKFEW. It will explore how STEAM education can focus on problem-solving, cultivate a maker culture, and integrate its spirit into the entire school's development. Drawing from their six-year journey in establishing and expanding the STEM (now STEAM) programme, the seminar will highlight their strategies and experiences. The speaker’s team began in the 2017/18 academic year, introducing STEAM into extracurricular activities, school-wide events, and regular curricula for Form 2 and Form 3 students. Key highlights include our structured curriculum design, emphasising hands-on learning, creative problem-solving, and various technologies like Object blocks, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc. The speaker will share insights into how the team overcame challenges such as limited resources and initial resistance and successfully collaborated with external organisations.

The seminar will also cover this school’s teacher training initiatives and STEAM integration across subjects like Mathematics, Science, Music, and Art, ensuring a holistic and engaging learning experience. Participants will gain practical knowledge of curriculum development, resource management, and strategies for fostering a sustainable maker culture within their schools. Their STEAM programme has significantly transformed their school environment. The speaker’s team has cultivated a strong maker culture, where students are eager to engage in problem-solving and creative projects. Key outcomes include a marked increase in student participation in STEAM activities and competitions, with students winning numerous awards. The speaker’s team has also successfully integrated STEAM education into multiple subjects, enhancing interdisciplinary learning. Their efforts have led to a substantial rise in students choosing science electives. Deliverables from this presentation will include comprehensive lesson plans, examples of student projects, and a guide on designing STEAM curriculum. Participants will leave with actionable strategies and resources to implement and sustain a robust STEAM programme in their own schools.

Participants of this seminar will understand:
1. practical strategies for integrating STEAM education into school curricula and extracurricular activities;
2. methods for cultivating a maker culture that emphasises problem-solving and creativity; and
3. insights on securing funding and collaborating with external organisations to enhance STEAM education.
