Is Using ChatGPT in Mathematics Learning and Teaching Practical?
21st Century Classroom
Overview
Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, generative AI technology has rapidly become a hot topic. As a language model, ChatGPT excels in language tasks, but its performance in mathematics has not met the expectations of math teachers. In fact, GPT-4 has significantly surpassed the previous ChatGPT 3.5 version in mathematical performance.
In this open lesson, the speaker will introduce the practical applications of GPT-4 in math teaching, including generating exercises and exam questions, problem-solving, drawing mathematical diagrams, and image recognition. The focus will be on how to obtain the most useful information from GPT-4 through appropriate prompts. The speaker hasbeen using ChatGPT for about a year and a half, frequently utilising this tool for creating questions, preparing lessons, designing exams, setting student assignments, and providing examination guidance for DSE candidates, with satisfactory results. Additionally, the speaker has visited several local schools and hosted sessions during school-wide teacher development days and online seminars, where the speaker introduced to the teaching community how generative AI technology can be effectively used to reduce teachers' workload.
Participants of this open lesson will:
1. explore the capabilities of GPT-4 in handling mathematical problems;
2. experience the astonishing efficiency of GPT-4 in simulating mathematical questions; and
3. observe the rapid progress of GPT-4 in recognising mathematical images.
