‘Living in Gratitude in Yim Tin Tsai’ : Using eLearning tools to Promote Values Education

Innovation Classroom

Overview

Different eLearning tools are mixed to create a virtual study tour to Yim Tim Tsai to promote values education through the 'knowledge, emotion, intention and action' dimensions. Students watch a video about Hong Kong's salt industry through Edpuzzle before class to get a preliminary understanding of Yim Tin Tsai. In class, students use tablet computers to log in to Google Earth, browse the landmark routes designed by the teacher, conduct independent inquiry-based learning, and reflect on the life stories behind different landmarks according to their own learning progress. The teacher then uses Padlet to conduct a group discussion and debriefing. Finally, students are divided into groups to prepare for the ‘Pay it Forward’ activity so that students can put the values they have learned into practice.

This open lesson will demonstrate how to use interactive eLearning tools to transform the traditional moral education classroom which is conducted in the form of lecture presentation. Students can integrate into virtual scenarios through the Google Earth e-learning tool and develop their independent learning abilities. Different landmark spot activities also trigger students' reflection on life and establish positive values. Padlet also provides a platform for students to express their opinions in groups through text, pictures, recordings, etc., guiding students to communicate and discuss, and put what they have learned into practice in life.

Participants of this open lesson will:
1. recognise the importance of values education in the 21st century classroom;
2. master the skills of using e-learning tools to promote values education; and
3. willing to inject new elements of independent learning and e-learning into traditional teaching in order to optimise teaching strategies and improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching.
