The Journey of Mathematical Modelling in Secondary Schools
InnoSTEMer
Overview
The initiative shared by the speaker in this seminar is part of the Hong Kong Education Bureau’s ‘Seed’ project, which aims to establish a school-based mathematical modeling course for Secondary 2 students, entitled ‘Mathematical Modeling: A Disney Ride Adventure’. The speaker hopes that through this activity, students will be able to construct mathematical models and optimise the routes they design. The course comprises 10 sessions, each 60 minutes long, during which students will participate in group project-based learning. During this seminar, the speaker will discuss the difficulties and challenges we've faced, present the worksheets and grading criteria, and explain how to use apps for data collection. Finally, the speaker will share the insights on how to optimise this project that was gained from the 5-day Shanghai STEAM curriculum leaders’ exchange tour in Mathematics and Science Education, organised by the EDB.
At the ‘Seed’ Project’s dissemination seminar titled ‘Promoting STEAM Education by Infusing Mathematical Modeling into Secondary Mathematics’, the speaker’s team shared our experiences with this initiative. Furthermore, they have applied for the Hong Kong Education Bureau’s Educational Research Award Scheme for this year, successfully passed the preliminary review, and plan to submit our final paper in August.
Participants of this seminar will:
1. learn through case study: Strategies for Advancing Mathematical Modeling in Junior Secondary Education;
2. explore the Challenges Faced in the Implementation of Mathematical Modeling; and
3. understand the Obstacles Students Encounter with Mathematical Modeling Learning.
