Using Generative AI and 3D Printing to Cultivate Students Cultural Literacy through Tang and Song Dynasty Aesthetics

21st Century Classroom

Overview

Du Fu's ‘Spring View’ states, ‘Scratching my white hair, it grows even shorter, almost unable to hold a hairpin’. During the Tang and Song dynasties, a cultural golden age, architecture, clothing, and artistic culture profoundly influenced the world. This sharing session will introduce a school's 3D printing course with a focus on Chinese cultural characteristics. This seminar begins with an appreciation of hairpin culture, teaching students to use generative AI to enrich their creative ideas and Tinkercad to design hairpins with modern elements. Students will don traditional Chinese attire and wear the hairpins they created, fostering positive values through hands-on activities.

By appreciating the cultural significance of hairpins and utilising 3D printing technology along with this school's generative AI programmes, students will design their own hairpins inspired by classic designs, embodying the beauty of Chinese culture and enhancing their cultural literacy.

Participants of this open lesson will:
1. gain interdisciplinary insights between Chinese culture and STEAM subjects;
2. learn to use generative AI for product design; and
3. learn to use Tinkercad to draw hairpins.
