Transdisciplinary Activity in Special School
Future Learning Theatre
Overview
The seminar will include a brief introduction of the school, the curriculum structure and the development of the ‘Curriculum Integration Activity’ in the school. The main content of this seminar will be the introduction of the Curriculum Integration Activities held in recent years, including STEAM CreativeMart (2022), RC Expo (2023) and RC Fashion Show (2024). The process, structure of planning and the teaching strategies used in the whole-school event will be introduced. As this school is a special education school for mild and moderate grade ID students, teaching techniques in developing STEAM activity in special schools will be discussed.
The outcome of the Curriculum Integration Activity will be presented through the showcase performances organised in the past three years. The performance of the students and feedback from the participants (including teaching staff, visiting guests and parents) have shown that students enjoyed the learning activity and have gained interest in inquiry-based learning and developed their design thinking skills. Basic skills required for participating in STEAM activities and other generic skills have also been trained at different levels. Students were able to engage in collaborative learning and project learning even when they have vast diversities in their abilities and interests.
Participants of this seminar will understand:
1. teaching strategies in developing STEAM learning in special school: the speakers will explore how STEAM education is implemented in special education, such that the level of participation and learning outcomes can be enhanced;
2. the learning of students with special education needs and special education schools in Hong Kong: the speakers hope to promote a more thorough understanding on their learning needs, potentials and achievements in order to enhance respect and support for them.
3. Creativity and potential is not limited to an individual's intellectual barriers and learning obstacles. The speakers encourage the audience to be able to see the uniqueness of every student, so that each student will have the opportunity to exhibit their talents and abilities.
